Somalia Launches Africa’s First National IPv6 Center

The National Communications Authority (NCA) and Jamhuriya University of Science & Technology (JUST), in partnership with the African Network Information Center (AFRINIC), have officially launched Somalia’s first National IPv6 Internet Protocol Center—a groundbreaking milestone in the nation's digital transformation journey.

This center, the first of its kind in Africa, will function as a national hub for research, training, and the deployment of IPv6 technology, supporting Somalia’s transition to a more modern, secure, and scalable internet infrastructure.

🛰️ A Strategic Move Toward the Future

As internet usage and connected devices grow rapidly, the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses poses a serious challenge to digital expansion. The adoption of IPv6 is essential for:

  • Expanding internet access nationwide

  • Enhancing network security

  • Enabling future technologies such as 5G, smart infrastructure, and the Internet of Things (IoT)

🤝 Strengthening National Collaboration

At the launch event, NCA and JUST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), officially designating JUST as the host institution of the center. The MoU outlines key areas of cooperation, including:

  • Technical training and certification

  • Collaborative research and development

  • Public awareness and community outreach

This partnership will help ensure a smooth and inclusive transition to IPv6 across Somalia.

📡 Aligning with the National ICT Strategy

The establishment of the National IPv6 Center is a key pillar of Somalia’s National ICT Strategy, reinforcing the government's commitment to a secure, inclusive, and sustainable digital future.

With this initiative, Somalia not only accelerates its own digital growth but also takes a leadership role in Africa's broader internet evolution.
